Although Amnesty International has a shorter history than the ICRC or even the UN, the organization has a track record mired in corruption, racism, antisemitism, arbitrary political bias, and toxic work culture.
Their most recent commentary on the russian invasion of Ukraine shifts the blame away from the aggressor and puts the responsibility for civilian casualties on the Ukrainian military.
This is an egregious case of victim blaming and shows that Amnesty International is not abiding by its core principle of independence from “any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion.”
However, it is unsurprising given the organization’s disgraceful history of scandals and controversies. So Amnesty International is only left with two options of either undergoing significant institutional changes or disbanding in shame.
Below we present you with a list of articles and reports documenting Amnesty International’s history of failures, scandals, and corruption.
“The international organization continues to bury the remains of its reputation” - Ukrainian ombudsman
Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets believes Amnesty "implements the Kremlin's information policy" because it distributes leaflets in which it calls the investigation of the International Criminal Court in Ukraine "selective justice.”- original tweet here
